NASH METROPOLITAN CAR RADIO The radio on the right is a model PE86CR manufactured by the PYE company (UK) for the Nash Metropolitan 1950's car. This radio made loud humming noises from the vibrator found in the power supply. It did not receive at all or very little. I brought this radio up on a variable supply DC source (12V) and determined that the tubes all lit, and the vibrator appeared to be working correctly. The original caps in this radio were (3) 16mfd (275V) found in an electrolytic can under the large orange tubular coil in the photo. They all tested useless and were disconnected and left in place. Two of the 16mfd caps were used in the power supply and the other was in the final audio section. I replaced these with (Black cylindrical) 22ufd (400V) caps arranged around the inside of the chassis. This presented quite a challenge in inserting the caps with limited space. After this, the radio tested very strong signal and audio with a 1 foot wire antenna from my basement shop. This again illustrates that Electrolytics are frequently the culprit in a non-working radio. |
